Ysgol Llandeilo's story - The Mouse in the Castle

Once upon a time there was a tiny, grey mouse who lived in a dark, smelly hole in the bottom of a young tree.

From the castle the fat, hairy, angry, king shouted,“That tree is blocking my view. I want it cut down immediately!” and the woodcutters went into the wood shed to sharpen their axes.

The woodcutters stomped into the forest with their axes on their backs. They were ready to chop the tree down and destroy the mouse’s home. The mouse rushed out and begged and pleaded with the woodcutters not to cut down the tree but they did not hear him.

They swung their axes back and chopped the tree down. Now the tree is chopped down the mouse is very unhappy and has to find somewhere else to live. The mouse walked and walked until he came to a big, strong castle.

“I’ll live in the castle and there will be plenty of yummy scraps left over for me”, thought the mouse.

As he walked into the castle he saw the king’s cat which was ginger and had sharp claws with vicious sharp teeth. The startled mouse ran as fast as he could around the castle to escape. The cat chased the terrified mouse who could feel his heart racing. Just as the cat pounced the mouse looked forwards and saw a grate and dived down the hole.

“Oh no, I lost my dinner”, cursed the cat.

When the mouse fell he was terrified. His grey fur was standing on end and he had goose bumps. Splash! He landed, headfirst in the stinking, old sewer. He looked up, cursing, and saw a man sitting there. He jumped back, astonished and saw that the man was middle-aged, dirty, wearing rags and hungry.

The mouse said, “What are you doing here?”.

The man answered in a creaky voice, “The king ordered me to clean the sewers because there was a horrible smell in the castle and the king forgot about me and left me here”.

The mouse said, “How terrible. How are you going to get out?”

The man answered, “I don’t know”

The mouse said “We both have a problem so if I help you, will you help me?”

The man said, “I agree if you agree”

The mouse said, “I agree”.

The man carefully lifted the scared, little mouse up and told him, “The plan is I’ll lift you up to the grating and you will get help from the castle”.

“Okay” squeaked the mouse and off he scurried, went through a crack in a door and bumped into the cat – again!

The mouse saw the cat and jumped and said, “Time to go, time to go!”. The cat had been watching the grate. “Ah, my dinner’s back!” he grinned.

The cat ran after the mouse all around the castle, zoomed through the kitchen, rushed through king’s bedroom and sped through the lounge. The mouse ran fast and escaped through a tiny crack that led into the big, dark, smelly, black dungeon.

“Oh, no. Not again!” sobbed the cat.

In the smelly, dark dungeon the mouse found a girl chained up in the corner of her cold cell, shivering helplessly.

“Hello”, whispered the girl, smiling sadly.

“Hello”, replied the mouse, “What are you doing down here?”

“I was the princess’s servant and I washed the princess’s clothes and got food for her but she was jealous because I am prettier than her and so she chained me up down here.”

“That princess is really mean!” squeaked the mouse “If I was big enough I would give her a taste of her own medicine . I’ll help you to escape if you help me.”

“That’s a great idea” the girl replied excitedly, "but you need to get the keys off the guard he’s in a deep sleep at the moment just outside the cell, snoring loudly.”

“Okay!” The little mouse scurried across the stone floor and got the keys. The mouse wanted to help the girl because they made a promise.

When they were free they snuck past the guard. They secretly got to the weapon room. They see a glass case.

“Look at that golden sword. We could use that to get the man out of the sewer”, said the girl.

“Good idea”, said the mouse.

The girl picked up one of the woodcutters axes and swung it back and smashed the glass case with a great big crash.

Then she picked up the golden sword. The shiny, magical, golden sword. Then they hear heavy footsteps stomping, heading their way. The door flew open and the guards burst in, drawing their swords.

She hesitated for a second and started to swing the sword back. Suddenly the end of the sword fell off and the girl thought she had broken it and they found a piece of paper and the girl thought it was a treasure map. It said “Jump through the mirror.”

So the girl scooped the mouse up and put him on her shoulder and ran through the mirror. They both wished to land in the place they most wanted to be and when they landed, they felt dizzy and ended up in the dirty, smelly old sewer. They ran through the sewer and eventually came to a man who the girl recognised as her father, who was the same man that had helped the mouse and they jumped for joy.

They kept going along the sewer and ended up in the forest and saw a beautiful cottage.

They buried the sword in the garden and then potatoes, tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers, sweetcorn and carrots grew straight away and they made a big pot of soup and the mouse was their pet and when they had any leftovers the mouse had them.
